Saturday, while having lunch at our favorite burger place, my family and I sat down next a team of hungry linemen. I struck up a conversation with them and found out that they were from Amarillo Texas and were here to help us get our power back after Irma’s visit. The team was very experienced with years of working in all conditions so it was interesting to hear their observations on the differences between here and Texas. The two biggest are the humidity and the cause and scope of the outage. Amarillo is hot, but doesn’t have the humidity so that put an entirely different strain on the actual work. In Amarillo, large scale outages are often from tornados downing a long line of power poles. They have a process whereby they just work down the line. Irma was a different type of wind event where she knocked down trees all over the place and it could be any number of people out from each one. They couldn’t set up an assembly line process and had to move from one location to another to help everyone get back power. Tough work, but with their help power is back on almost everywhere.

In a previous Article, we discussed when you know things are inefficient and ineffective. I found this to be a great example of how getting out of your normal routine can change perspective on the work you are performing. It is so easy to fall into a routine and flow and not even think that it could be easier, faster, and have better results.

When working with my clients, I enjoy learning how, and why, they are performing a process or procedure. This “fresh set of eyes” has amazing results. For example, I had a client with multiple locations across the country. As they grew they never reviewed of their AP approval processes. Through discussions and observations of their activities, I was able to identify and Optimize multiple aspects of their process. The results of the project are the Realization of a full FTE's worth of efficiencies, as well as reduction in processing time and costs. The improved activities and flow allowed leadership to Focus on the business instead of their AP approval process.
