Success Factor #2 – Vision

Good corporate leadership already has the vision skill set.  They use it  every day to develop strategies for capitalizing on opportunities and threats in their ongoing operations.  However; Leadership doesn’t always create a solid vision for transformations.

Jeffery Immelt, CEO of GE, discussed in a recent Harvard Business Review article on his tenure at GE that having a vision for the company is key. His vision concentrated on 5 key changes that GE needed to make. Portfolio, Innovation, Strategic Focus, Globalization, & Organization. With this vision he has started one of the largest transformations ever attempted.

Recommendations:

Using the roadmap from Success Factor #1 Overcoming Delay, Leadership needs to:

  1. Define and OWN its vision of the future.

  2. Communicate a clear, concise message on why it is necessary and how it will make the company better. Constantly.

  3. Make the message a beacon and rallying cry for the company to unite behind and create a “pool” of shared purpose and shared goals.
